The Pen

Poem, written March 2021

The pen 

expresses thought,

my own

and another’s.

It shares the story

in my head

which creates a new life

in yours.

It models wisdom 

and structures important concepts

that one

might find useful

in non-fiction.

It creates suspense,

romance,

comedy,

horror,

thrill,

within the imaginary lives of fiction.

It has fun

circling treasures

in Search-a-Word puzzles,

writing letters

in the New York Times Crossword,

and aligning numbers

in Sudoku.

It bolds,

underlines,

italicizes,

and capitalizes 

for effect.

It stars,

asterisks,

highlights,

and sidenotes

things to recall.

It provides a tool

for companionship,

connecting

me and you,

you and me.
